Description

JAV 109 — Great Organ Builders, Volume 6 — Peter Stoltzfus

The first significant organ built after Harrison’s first encounter with the organs in Germany, Opus 948 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia was built in 1937. Hallmarks of Harrison’s mature style found here are the two choruses in the Great — one based on full-sounding principals, the second on lighter diapasons - and the large Positiv division. Among the organ’s 104 ranks is Harrison’s first Krummhorn stop, ideally suited for Alain’s "Variations on a Theme of Jannequin," which also showcases the instrument’s copious mutations. Sowerby’s grandly lyrical Passacaglia (unpublished) and Bach’s monumental C minor Passacaglia receive spirited performances by Stoltzfus, whose expressive sensibilities shine in Reger’s "Benedictus" and Vierne’s "Preambule."
